Going down memory lane and promoting regional solidarity
Dear Friend,
We’re in the thick of it preparing for our upcoming rally on 23 September, 3-7pm at Hong Lim Park!
This year, we’re calling for a just and inclusive roadmap towards net-zero emissions, and to do that, we need to accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels, protect our ecosystems, and empower our people. You can read more about our Calls to Action on Instagram and the longform version here.
If you’ve not done so already, you can RSVP for the rally now via Facebook or by joining our Telegram channel — and please invite your friends to go with you too! We hope to see all of you there because collective action only works when we all show up (even perhaps our new President-elect, whom we invited to the rally at a recent event ;))
Lastly, for the creatives, we’re organising a pre-rally art jam at thecoup.sg on 17 September, Sunday, 2-5pm at 7 Ann Siang Hill. Channel your creativity and connect with other climate-conscious individuals while making placards for the rally! Cardboard, paper, and art materials will be provided, though you are welcome to bring your own. RSVP at https://tinyurl.com/sgcrartjam (although walk-ins are accepted too!)
For a better world,
SG Climate Rally
To fundraise for the rally, we organised two guided nature walks at Labrador Park on 6 and 20 August, where we taught participants more about the flora and fauna at the park, and shared more about Singapore’s first two oil refineries and the earlier homes of the Orang Laut. Check out this video to see more about the experience:
We’re also giving out 5 copies of Eating Chili Crab in the Anthropocene, edited by Matthew Schneider-Mayerson, in a raffle as part of our fundraising efforts! Check out the Instagram post with details of how to enter the raffle by 9 September. We’re also still selling our zines which open up into either our rally poster or a climate justice poster on our Ko-Fi page, grab them while stocks last!
It’s also been 4 years since our last physical rally, so to get participants warmed up and raring to go, we’ve publishing a series of explainers on our social media about topics related to the rally.
First up, we break down what exactly we mean when we say we’re fighting for ‘climate justice’. For those new to our movement, we give a little trip down memory lane as to what we’ve done since our first rally, as well as our vision, mission, and values that we strive to abide by. Lastly, as a tribute to the site of our rally, we delve a little into the history of Hong Lim Park, and more importantly, its socio-political importance.
More explainers are coming up, so stay tuned!
Last but not least, we’ve published the second episode of our Climate Kopitiam podcast, focusing on the debate over whether Singapore is a developed or developing nature, and the implications this has on the world of climate finance and negotiations, as well as climate justice. Give it a listen and check out the first episode as well if you haven’t already! In the run up to the rally, we’ll also have episodes featuring other climate groups in the region as well.
Of course, we can’t fight for climate justice alone; it takes a village. On our social media, we’re also featuring other organisations who are working towards a braver and more equitable feature with us. First up, we featured Ground-Up Initiative (GUI), a nonprofit nurturing the kampung spirit in today’s Singapore:
We then featured Orang Laut SG, a platform that champions cultural and heritage preservation and the support of indigenous voices in Singapore:
And check out our amazing community booth partners who will be at the rally showcasing their work to make a more just world!
We also want to amplify voices across the region. In preparation for this, we will be collecting testimonials on the different ways the climate crisis has impacted lives across SEA, and will feature them at a booth at our rally.
